Of all the sights I saw during Day 1 of my tour in NYC, the most poignant is Fritz Koenig’s sculpture entitled “The Sphere”.
“The Sphere” was commissioned by the owner of World Trade Center in 1966. Fritz Koenig, a German artist, started working on the bronze sculpture in 1967. He completed it four years later for the opening of World Trade Center. [Reference]
It is sad that the sculpture tagged as a symbol of world peace was damaged by a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Despite the holes and dents, “The Sphere” remains fairly intact and has been relocated in Battery Park six months after the attack. The sculpture has become an icon of hope and the indestructible spirit of USA. On September 11, 2002, the eternal flame was ignited in honor of those who were lost during the 9/11 attack.
“The Sphere” brought me a sense of comfort. World peace may be threatened by anyone. With hope, courage and resilient spirits, we can withstand any threat. Together, we can bring back the peace that our world deserves.
